Why quit smoking?
If you have been smoking for the majority of your life, you may think that there is no point in quitting now. However, contrary to this popular viewpoint, from the first day you go without a cigarette you can improve your health.
After a week of not smoking, your lungs will have cleared dramatically from the start of the week. Your blood pressure will go down as your arteries become less clogged with tar. You will feel more awake, although still experiencing cravings, your body starts to recover even if you have been smoking for years.
It is at this point when many smokers fall off the bandwagon and go back to smoking. At this stage, nicotine replacement therapies can help to control those nasty cravings. Patches and gums can be used, or even the electronic cigarette can be tried.
The e cig is a battery operated inhaler refill system which supplied you with nicotine but also gives you something to do with your hands. After years of smoking, it can be difficult to quit the habit of physically holding a cigarette; the e cigarette helps overcome this by imitating a normal cigarette. The vapour given off by the inhaler is harmless to anyone who breathes it in- unlike cigarettes which emit thousands of chemicals and create passive smoking, which can lead to heightened asthma and other breathing problems.
After a month of not smoking, your body will already have recovered from many years worth of smoking abuse. Your heart will be able to pump more blood round the body and your chances of contracting lung cancer are cut. Cravings may still be experienced, which is why it is important to be sensible and keep taking nicotine replacements to aid the recovery process.
The key is to being realistic, there is no point aiming to be smoke-free within a week because it is impossible for the body to achieve this. The withdrawals would be so severe you could end up doing yourself more damage in the long run.
Lin Reynolds, aged 58, commented “having smoked most of my life it was such a part of my routine I never thought I would quit smoking. I was determined after one Christmas when I couldn’t keep up with my Grandson for being out of breath that I needed to stop, for good. With the help of the e cig, I managed to cut down sensibly over a six month period. I noticed the difference within the first week, and even more so when the cravings start to ease up. I can now chase my Grandson round the house and garden without feeling like I am gasping for air! It is such a relief to feel like this again.”
